A Temporary Pause on Mackerel Products

Please note: We are facing a temporary shortage of mackerel, meaning there will be no mackerel products available for the coming weeks.

Why is this happening?

A Huge Cut in Fishing Quotas: Northeast Atlantic mackerel fishing quotas have been slashed by 48% for 2026 following international negotiations to address sustainability concerns. This decision sets the total allowable catch (TAC) at 299,010 tonnes. While this is higher than the scientific advice (which recommended a 70% reduction), it is down to overfishing with super trawlers affecting species stocks.

Widespread Market Impact: Since early Spring, we and the wider UK fish market have been impacted. These cuts threaten the viability of the Scottish and Irish pelagic processing sectors, potentially endangering thousands of jobs. Even major retailers like Waitrose have ceased stocking all mackerel products at this time.

Skyrocketing Prices: This shortage has considerably affected mackerel prices, and costs per kg have more than doubled at the point of purchase. This is also applicable to our southwest waters in the summer months.

Unviable Processing: Because prices have doubled, processing mackerel into fishcakes and pâté is completely unviable in the short-term.

The Good News: Thanks to our great supplier relationships, we are confident we will be able to secure products at a better price soon. As soon as it is available once again, we will let you know!
